What is an EMI?

EMI stands for Equated Monthly Installment. It is the fixed amount a borrower generally pays every month toward a loan. Each EMI contains two components: the principal amount and the interest charged by the lender.

As the loan progresses, the interest component generally decreases while the principal component increases.

How does an EMI calculator work?

The calculator uses the loan amount, annual interest rate and loan tenure to calculate the monthly installment.

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ [(1 + r)n − 1]

Here, P represents the principal loan amount, r represents the monthly interest rate, and n represents the total number of monthly installments.

Factors that affect your EMI

  • Loan Amount: A larger loan generally results in a higher monthly installment.
  • Interest Rate: A higher interest rate generally increases the EMI and total interest paid.
  • Loan Tenure: A longer tenure can reduce the monthly EMI, but may increase the total interest paid over the life of the loan.
  • Repayment Structure: Different lenders and loan products may use different terms, fees or repayment structures.
